Team Woz

Team Woz at Head of the Charles Regatta

This fall, 11 RC athletes competed in Head of the Charles Regatta to raise money for
Head Coach Helen Woznack. Coach Helen sustained serious injuries in a skydiving
accident this past summer, and the entire RC family came together to support her
after the news. Head of the Charles is second largest regatta in the world, behind
only the Henley Royal Regatta in London. These rowers were excited to be able to
row for their coach at such a huge venue. Our boats, a Girls 8+ and a Girls 2x,
competed under the name Team Woz. These two boats were the only RC entries
submitted that made it through the HOCR lottery selection process, as competition
for entries is very difficult due to the huge demand. Coached by Becky, Nick, Rachael,
and Jackie (who also competed in HOCR for Team Woz), the 11 rowers and one
alternate practiced Saturdays and Sundays, working around busy schedules,
including, for many rowers, other sports.
When the day came, both boats were extremely excited to compete. Both
competitions were huge, with 33 boats in the Girls 2x category and 75 in the Girls 8+
category. Both boats held up against tough competition in this 5000 meter (3 mile!)
race, including 7 bridges and 5 major turns. Most of the teams in HOCR practice
every day for months leading up to this race, and although the Team Woz boats only
had a total of 10 practices, they still performed well, avoided collisions on this difficult
course, and had great races. Everyone was excited about the races and happy to
have raced for such a great cause.
